Should you join the alumni association after your graduation

Phew! You’ve done it! Yep, after three or four (or more) long years of hard studying, stress, all-nighters, part-time jobs, falling asleep in class, barely scraping by and just a *few* fraternity parties, you have finally finished your degree. Your essay has been submitted, your exams have ended, your life is getting back to normal (kinda) and you’re getting ready to don your cap and gown, and collect that darned piece of paper you’ve been looking forward to your whole life. So…what next? Leaving college and entering into the dreaded world of adulthood may seem daunting, but you don’t have to put your college completely behind you. This is why you should join the alumni association after your graduation…

You get the chance to network

Unfortunately, we live in a world where it’s not what you know, but WHO you know, and if you’re from a small town in the middle of nowhere, networking opportunities can be few and far between. So, instead of retreating back to your cabin in the woods and laying low for a couple of months after you’ve graduated, use that opportunity to take advantage of your alumni networking events and forums. The best part about alumni associations is that there are normally students in the group who graduated decades ago, and have already made it big in the industry. Whether you attend events or even just chat with them online, you have to chance to really get your foot in the door.

They can help your career

From a college point of view, they want all of their students to become big-time actors, businessmen or women, sports stars or work in some kind of successful career. Most of the time, this is because they want to show off (it’s true). However, this can work in your favor. To help you reach those goals, the alumni association will often help you in your career. They will give you tips and tricks on how to succeed in the world of business, they will give you contacts, and they may even offer job fairs for their former students. Take full advantage of all of the opportunities they give you because you never know where this will take you.

You can stay connected to your university

For most people, your few years at university amount to the best years of your life. You have fun, you learn new things, you experience new events, and you really do have an amazing time. Many recent graduates feel down in the dumps when they graduate from college, as they no longer have sporting events to go to, they can no longer go to free concerts or enjoy the epic student discounts. However, if you join the alumni association, you don’t have to leave all of that behind you. Most of the time, your former college will continue to offer these perks to those who are part of their alumni association. Of course, you may have to pay a joining or membership fee to be a part of this association, but who could resist those kinda perks?!

Have you just graduated, or are you close to graduating from college? Well, there’s only one answer for you – you just HAVE to join your alumni association. What are you waiting for? Go sign up, now!
